the pine-scented air
It all began with Augusto Girardelli – “el Gusto” – a dairyman, farmer, sportsman, and our grandfather. A man of the mountains in the truest sense: someone who knows them, respects them, and protects them. When the war took his brother Elio away, Augusto made a silent vow. He returned to Mount Altissimo and, over the following years, planted almost half a million trees on its slopes. By hand, one by one. The forest of Swiss stone pine which fills the air around Elgus with its fragrance today is the result of his endeavours.
In 1958, Hotel San Giacomo opened on that very same mountain. Now being run by the third generation, it’s called Elgus Nature Retreat – inspired by everyone’s nickname for Augusto – and is a fantastic 4-star hotel in Trentino. The name may be new, but the spirit is the same as ever: people at its heart, genuine warmth, and the mountains always out there, waiting. Some things don’t change. They’re passed down from generation to generation.

Our 4-star hotel in Trentino is located on the Brentonico plateau, at 1,200 metres above sea level, with verdant meadows stretching out before it in summer and cross-country ski trails just a stone’s throw away in winter.
